Occupy London insists St Paul's eviction is 'only the beginning'

Occupy London activists have said plans are already afoot for a new protest after their camp at St Paul's Cathedral was dismantled in the early hours of the morning.

Twenty people were arrested as the Occupy London camp was evicted, but the protest group, which has been outside the London landmark since October last year, said the City of London Corporation could 'not derail a movement'.

'Be assured that plans are already afoot: plans of some ambition, employing a diversity of tactics and delivered with the aplomb you would expect from us,' a statement from Occupy London said.

'All will be revealed in time. May is one of our favourite months.'

The statement went on to say: 'The relationships forged during these strange and beautiful four and a half months still have much further to run. This is only the beginning.'

Officers from the Metropolitan police, including the riot squad, worked alongside bailiffs to remove the protesters.

The move came after members of the Occupy London movement were denied the right of appeal against a High Court ruling that they could be lawfully evicted.

Although some members of the camp removed their tents from the site, up to 60 protesters still stood firm - forcing the City of London Corporation into what it called the 'regrettable' action of evicting them.

The eviction, which took place over several hours during the night, was said to have passed off largely peacefully.

However, some protesters took to using wooden pallets to build makeshift barriers.

A number of different items were seized during the raids, including office swivel chairs, supermarket shopping trolleys and fire extinguishers.

In a statement confirming the eviction, the City of London Corporation said it 'has begun to enforce the High Court orders for the removal of the tents and equipment outside St Paul's'.

'We regret that it has come to this but the High Court judgment speaks for itself and the Court of Appeal has confirmed that judgment,' the statement continued.

'High Court enforcement officers employed by the City of London Corporation are undertaking the removal with the police present to ensure public safety and maintain order.

'We would ask protesters to move on peaceably.'

In a separate statement, the City of London Police added: 'At 12:10 tonight, bailiffs employed by the City of London Corporation began enforcing a High Court order for the removal of tents and equipment outside St Paul's Cathedral.

'Officers from the City of London Police, supported by Metropolitan Police, are present to ensure public safety, maintain order and facilitate lawful protest.'

A few of the more defiant in the group claimed they would continue to make a stand against corporate greed in Britain, but it would seem this now needs to be in ways other than a permanent camp in the Square Mile.

'We're getting evicted but it's not the end - not by a long shot,' one protester said.

Top 3 Myths about DDoS Attacks

Nowadays you don't even need to stand up to participate in a protest. Nou just need to find an e-flyer from a group of Internet activists, like Anonymous, that explainins the target, the cause, and a simple set instructions for downloading an cyber-attack tool which, when used en masse, can disable the computers and servers of major corporations. Or as my colleague Neil Rubenking pointed out a couple weeks ago, you can cluelessly become roped into such an operation by clicking on the wrong link!

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have been around for a long time, but as the tools and strategies evolve, practically any n00b can participate. In the beginning a DDoS attack just meant flooding the network through the Internet pipe or overwhelming the firewall. This is still a popular method used against large targets like the FBI and Mastercard. But another attack vector has emerged, whereby attackers can enter the application level using HTTP and SMTP floods, which overload the computer's memory until it comes to a screeching halt.

In a white paper published this week, Radware debunks a few of the most common myths about DDoS attacks:

1. It Takes a Lot of BandwidthWith DDoS, David can overcome Goliath. DDoS don't require acres of bandwidth to disable your website. In fact, 76 percent of attacks are less than 1Gbps and 32 percent are less than 10 Mbps, Radware found.

2. The Higher the BPS and PPS, the More Serious the AttackMany people assume that the bigger the attack, typically measured as bytes-per-second (BPS) or packets-per-second (PPS), the more serious it is. But according to Radware, it's just as important to look at the type of attack. A smaller HTTP flood on the application level can do more damage than a larger UDP flood on the network, for instance.

3. A Firewall Should Be Your First DefenseHackers love the firewall because it's so easy to overwhelm, Radware says. In a recent survey of customers 24 percent said the firewall was the bottleneck of a DDoS attack. Their recommendation? Invest in DoS/DDoS mitigation hardware (yes, like the type Radware makes) that goes in front of the firewall. Network firewalls, for instance, won't protect your computers against DDoS attacks at the application level. Many firewalls have a SYN flood protection technology, but the same firewall cannot handle an HTTP flood.

I don't know if DDoS attacks are on the rise per se, but their targets are entering the mainstream conscience more and more. Just this year Anonymous mobilized an ongoing DDoS attack against the Department of Justice's website for taking down Megaupload, while Palestinian Anonymous members took down Israeli newspaper Haaretz by DDoS. We've also seen it used against the FBI, the Sony PlayStation Network, and numerous anti-Wikileaks companies.

El miércoles 18 de enero tuvo lugar la mayor manifestación de protesta online en la historia de Internet. Hubo un “apagón” de sitios web, grandes y pequeños, en protesta contra proyectos de ley presentados en la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado de Estados Unidos que podrían transformar profundamente a Internet. Los dos proyectos presentados, SOPA en la Cámara de Representantes y PIPA en el Senado, aparentemente pretenden poner fin a la piratería de material con copyright en Internet realizada a través de sitios web alojados fuera de Estados Unidos. Quienes se oponen a los proyectos, entre ellos los fundadores de Google, Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, Tumblr y Twitter, sostienen que limitarían la innovación y la inversión, rasgos típicos de la Internet libre y abierta. El gobierno de Obama ha manifestado algo de oposición a estas leyes, pero como muchos de sus seguidores aprendieron con dolor, lo que el Presidente Obama cuestiona un día, lo convierte en ley al día siguiente.

Ambos proyectos de ley son muy parecidos. SOPA permitiría a los titulares de derechos de autor entablar una demanda ante la fiscalía general de Estados Unidos contra cualquier sitio web extranjero que según ellos “comete o permite cometer violaciones penales” de las leyes de derechos de autor. Esto apunta sobre todo a la piratería de música y películas. La Ley SOPA permitiría a la industria cinematográfica, a través de los tribunales y del fiscal general de Estados Unidos, entablar un amplia serie de demandas para que proveedores de servicios de Internet y compañías de motores de búsqueda bloqueen el acceso a los sitios de los presuntos infractores, y hasta para que se impida establecer vínculos hacia esos sitios web, lo que los tornaría “inaccesibles”. La ley prohibiría además que las agencias de publicidad por Internet efectúen pagos a sitios web acusados de cometer violaciones de los derechos de autor.

La Ley SOPA podría dar lugar, entonces, a la clausura de sitios web abiertos y de uso público como YouTube si tan solo uno de sus millones de usuarios fuera acusado de violar un derecho de autor estadounidense. Como publicó en su blog David Drummond, director del departamento legal de Google: "Teniendo en cuenta solo al año pasado, dimos aviso de incumplimiento de derechos de autor a más de cinco millones de sitios web”. Y agrega: “PIPA y SOPA van a censurar la red, pondrán en riesgo el historial de innovación y creación de fuentes de trabajo de nuestra industria, y no pondrán fin a la piratería.”

Corynne McSherry, directora de propiedad intelectual de la Fundación Fronteras Electrónicas ( EFF .org), me dijo: “Estos proyectos de ley proponen otorgar nuevos poderes al gobierno y a los actores privados para que creen listas negras de sitios web que presuntamente estarían vinculados a algún tipo de violación online, para obligar así a los proveedores de servicios de Internet a impedir el acceso a esos sitios. Es por eso que los llamamos 'los proyectos de ley de la censura'”.

Según McSherry, estos proyectos son creación de la industria del entretenimiento y de “producción de contenidos”: “En especial, la Ley SOPA fue negociada sin consulta alguna al sector tecnológico, que fue específicamente excluido”. La exclusión del sector tecnológico generó alarma no sólo entre los ejecutivos de Silicon Valley, sino también entre los conservadores como el Congresista republicano de Utah Jason Chaffetz, uno de los preferidos del movimiento de derecha tea party. Chaffetz dijo en diciembre durante una sesión del Comité Judicial de la Cámara de Representantes: “Básicamente, vamos a reconfigurar Internet y cómo va a funcionar en adelante sin consultarles a los nerds.”

Uno de los promotores de la Ley PIPA, Patrick Leahy, el senador demócrata y progresista de Vermont, dijo en un comunicado de prensa: “Mucho de lo que se ha dicho [sobre PIPA ] es simplemente erróneo y parece que pretende sembrar temor y preocupación en vez de esclarecer o alentar soluciones viables.”

Lamentablemente, el enojo de Leahy suena asombrosamente parecido al de su ex colega del Senado, Christopher Dodd, que tras su retiro se convirtió en el presidente y director general del poderoso grupo de presión Motion Picture Association of America (según dicen, con un salario de 1,2 millones de dólares al año) y es uno de los principales impulsores de las leyes SOPA y PIPA , si no es en realidad uno de sus creadores. En referencia a la amplia protesta de base diseminada por Internet, Dodd dijo: “Es peligroso y problemático cuando las plataformas que sirven de portales a la información tergiversan intencionalmente los hechos con el objetivo de incitar a sus usuarios para, en realidad, favorcer sus intereses corporativos".

McSherry, de la Fundación Fronteras Electrónicas, afirmó: “Nadie le preguntó a Internet y bueno... Internet está hablando ahora. Vemos todo tipo de oposición a lo largo y ancho de la red. La gente se está poniendo de pie y diciendo: ‘No toquen la infraestructura básica de Internet. No lo vamos a tolerar.'”

Al mismo tiempo que se desarrollaba la protesta del apagón de Internet el 18 de enero, y a pesar de la presión ejercida por Dodd, los legisladores comenzaron a retirar su apoyo a estos proyectos de ley. Internet rugió y los políticos escucharon, algo que nos remite al levantamiento popular de 2003 contra la concentración de la propiedad de los medios propuesta por el entonces presidente de la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones, Michael Powell, hijo del General Colin Powell. La información es el sustento de la democracia y el pueblo no va a quedarse sentado mirando cómo intereses adinerados le impiden acceder a ella.

En el noticiero internacional de Democracy Now presentamos un debate sobre el tema. Jimmy Wales, cofundador de Wikipedia, explicó: “Estos proyectos están muy mal redactados. Está muy bien hablar de la necesidad de hallar algún tipo de solución a las conductas delictivas en Internet. Pero no está bien establecer un régimen de censura en respuesta a ello. No está bien implantar procedimientos que harían que las compañías financieras de tarjetas de crédito bloquearan emprendimientos legítimos ante una simple queja. Es necesario volver a la redacción y repensar todo el tema de manera de que la libertad de expresión se ubique al frente y como tema central.”

Cuando los usuarios de Internet visitaban el sexto sitio web más popular del mundo durante el apagón, Wikipedia.org, en la sección en inglés hallaban este mensaje:

"Imagínense un mundo sin libertad de conocimiento. Durante más de diez años hemos dedicado millones de horas a la construcción de la mayor enciclopedia de la historia de la humanidad. En este momento, el Congreso de Estados Unidos se encuentra debatiendo proyectos de ley que podrían perjudicar profundamente a la Internet libre y abierta."

En un mundo con revoluciones recientes impulsadas desde Internet, parece que los políticos estadounidenses están comprendiendo el mensaje.

Voces contra la globalizacion, los amos del mundo

Muy al principio de la crisis económica actual, el proceso de globalización ya se habia apoderado de gran parte del mundo, en unas pocas manos. RTV (Radio y Television Española), publico en el año 2008, una serie de documentales, interesantes para entender la crisis actual, y para darnos cuenta que ya muchos hablaban de posibles escenarios, claro que por entonces este documental español, se refería a Europa como parte de los países ricos.

Ramon Carrillo, primer ministro de Salud de Argentina, nombrado por Peron, ya se referia a la implicancia de la pobreza sobre los procesos de salud y enfermedad. Un parrafo de sus escritos, define toda una vision sobre la medicina, y es dificil obviarla: " “Frente a las enfermedades que genera la miseria, frente a la tristeza, la angustia y el infortunio social de los pueblos, los microbios, como causas de enfermedad, son unas pobres causas.”

La globalizacion como muchos otros procesos, no son neutros, no es lo mismo globalizacion que el universalismo que propugnaba el propio John Lennon........pero esa ya es otra historia.

The concept of Zeitgeist goes back to Johann Gottfried Herder and other German Romanticists, such as Cornelius Jagdmann, but is best known in relation to Hegel's philosophy of history. In 1769 Herder wrote a critique of the work Genius seculi by the philologist Christian Adolph Klotz and introduced the word Zeitgeist into German as a translation of genius seculi (Latin: genius - "guardian spirit" and saeculi - "of the age").

Usage in modern English

The Guardian.co.uk and Instructables.com have features showing popular and trending news, topics, and articles, called Zeitgeist.^[2]

Google releases categorized lists of the most searched keywords annually called "Google Zeitgeist".^[3]^[4]

American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins had produced an album which they titled Zeitgeist.

The Unity in Ubuntu, GNOME 3.x and many other Linux/BSD based operating systems use a logging application named the "zeitgeist-daemon". It logs recently opened and most used documents, applications and many other things, but it can be easily disabled or removed.
